BitTorrent is losing ground. Who took his place on the Internet?

Canadian company Sandvine shared web traffic statistics that show its distribution by volume. As it turns out, the BitTorrent protocol is going through hard times – it has been fairly displaced by several popular online platforms.

According to statistics , in the home Internet segment, BitTorrent has moved from its once dominant position to sixth place in the ranking with an average of 46 MB of outgoing traffic per person. The leaders were cloud storage iCloud and Google Cloud, the FaceTime communication service, the Google search engine and YouTube video hosting.

On mobile devices, social networks and instant messengers hold the palm. The first place is taken by TikTok, the second by Facebook Messenger*, and the third by Snapchat. As for BitTorrent, it didn’t make it into the top 10 on this list at all.

Before the advent of Web 2.0, file sharing over P2P networks was a major driver of traffic. Now online services have taken its place. Another possible reason for the decline in the popularity of the protocol is the transition of pirates to an online distribution model instead of distributions on trackers.
