TikTok announced the creation of a teen council aimed at advising the company on the safety of young users of the app. The group, made up of 15 teenagers from different countries, has already begun meetings with the company’s management, including chief executive officer Shaw Chu. The move comes as part of TikTok’s efforts to improve the safety and security of young users.
Council members have already influenced the upcoming US media literacy campaign, which will aim to combat misinformation and AI-generated content, the company said. The group also weighed in on a “youth portal” feature that provides privacy and security resources within the app.
The purpose of the council is to provide advice on policies and safety issues that frequently affect adolescents. The group is also working with British organization Praesidio Safeguarding, which helped select the teenage board members. The company emphasizes that board members receive compensation for this.
