Swedish authorities said on Tuesday that two more people have been arrested on suspicion of espionage, including one accused of “serious illegal intelligence activities against Sweden and a foreign power”. Swedish authorities gave this information on Tuesday. Sweden’s prosecution authority said in a brief statement that the arrests were made on Tuesday morning. The identity of the other country involved was not disclosed. Sweden’s security agency said the operation, which included house searches, was carried out with the assistance of the police and Swedish armed forces.

The detective agency said the investigation has been “ongoing for some time”. The arrests were made in the early morning in the Stockholm area. No information was given about those arrested. Fredrik Hultgren Freyberg, a spokesman for Sweden’s domestic security service, known by its acronym SAPO, told Aftonbladet evening newspaper that “an early arrest of the suspects was needed”. A spokesman for Sweden’s armed forces told the newspaper that they had “supported SAPO with two helicopters”.

The prosecuting authority insisted the case was not linked to two Iran-born brothers who were charged in Sweden earlier this month for allegedly spying for Russia. Sweden, on 11 November, charged two Swedish citizens for allegedly spying for Russia and its military intelligence service GRU for nearly a decade from 2011 to 2021. One of the two worked for Sweden’s domestic intelligence agency. Both have denied any wrongdoing.
