A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has struck the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, near the southwest region of Malango. No injuries or deaths have yet been reported, but people in the capital Honiara felt tremors and shaking for about 20 seconds. Amid urgent tsunami warnings, the Prime Minister’s Office advised locals to move to higher ground.

However, the islands’ meteorological service later lifted the warning. A separate authority, the US-backed Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, also said the danger had largely passed. The quake occurred just after 13:00 local time (02:00 GMT) at a depth of 15 km (9 mi) and 18 km southwest of the coast, according to the US Geological Survey. It caused power outages and forced some people to evacuate buildings in Honiara.
