With several studies being conducted to understand the ill-effects of air pollution on our health, experts have expressed concern over the direct impact of indoor air quality on the outcome of the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process.

In an effort to raise awareness about real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) monitoring inside IVF clinics across India, a study was recently conducted that highlighted the pollutants present in labs that can affect IVF may prove detrimental to the process. Air purifier maker Aura Air has done a research on indoor air quality in IVF clinics across the country.

Dr. Gandhali Devrukhkar, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai, told News9, “HEPA filters are used during every IVF operation performed in the lab. Nitrogen dioxide and ozone are the two main factors that cause the air quality index to drop and are associated with lower birth rates. In addition, particles 10 mm or larger have been linked to miscarriage in pregnant women.”

“Since the entire IVF process is done in a controlled setting with quality control, any mistake can have an adverse effect on the pregnancy. The HEPA purifier should do filtration according to the amount of air pollution that is outside, although it completely depends on the quality of the machine. The air quality should be maintained inside the IVF operation room. Any shortfall can have an impact on every IVF procedure performed that month.

Carbon monoxide in the air linked to stillbirths

The study’s measures included AQI, PM 2.5 and PM 10 (particulate matter), VOCs (volatile organic compounds), CO2 (carbon dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), temperature and humidity.

Dr Devrukhkar said, “Whether inside or outside the IVF lab, other gases including sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide play a role in miscarriage and reduced fertility rates. Both men and women have experienced a decrease in fertility due to air pollution.”

He said, “For example, nitrogen dioxide present in the air affects the fluid present in the eggs during ovulation and thereby spoils the quality of the eggs. This can lead to low fertility rates and miscarriages. Mainly carbon monoxide is specifically linked to the still birth rate.”

AQI remains above 250 on average on many occasions

According to the results of the study, the AQI in the labs exceeded 250 on an average on many occasions, which is considered unhealthy and deadly. VOCs were the dominant pollutant in a common indoor air pollutant study, with the highest level recorded at 2600ppb, while its safe level is less than 500ppb. The study found that CO2, PM 2.5, PM 10 and CO levels were within safe limits.

Commenting on the study results, Bharadwaj PV, Managing Director, Aura Air said, “Air particles or any kind of pollutants found in laboratories can prove to be harmful for the entire IVF process. The study was conducted to create awareness about the importance of monitoring air quality in real time. Even the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Bill makes it mandatory for Indian IVF centers to submit monthly air-quality reports.”

“IVF centers today have a budget for equipment that monitors and reduces VOC levels. Indoor air pollutants (air pollutants) can be controlled through high quality filters based on HEPA. We are confident that medical laboratories, IVF centers and hospitals will soon prioritize investing in purification technology to monitor air quality and get rid of harmful VOCs that can adversely affect lab results.”
