There has been an uproar in the politics of Pakistan after the tax papers of Army Chief General Bajwa were leaked. In fact, a Pakistani website had claimed that during General Bajwa’s 6-year tenure, his family and relatives had made billions in wealth. The website also said that in these days, the family and relatives of the army chief have made assets worth 12.7 billion. After which the Government of Pakistan had ordered an inquiry against the website which disclosed this in this matter. At the same time, on Tuesday, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said that two people who leaked the income tax details of Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa have been identified. Dar also said that the leaking of the income tax details of the army chief was illegal.
Ishaq Dar made this claim
During an interview he said that I have seen the interim report of the investigation. I expect to get the final report today. He said that one person involved in the leak is from Lahore and the other is from Rawalpindi. The Finance Minister said that the officials concerned from the tax department had been authorized to access the data for their assessment. There is a possibility that some of the persons involved may have a right to see the income tax records as there is a (tax) circle in Rawalpindi where the assessment takes place.
He said that it is illegal to disclose one’s tax details except when a court has issued an order for the same. For this reason, an inquiry has been ordered in this. The law does not allow the release of income tax returns of the army chief or anyone else without a court order.
Ishaq Dar had ordered an inquiry yesterday
Significantly, the tax details of General Bajwa and his family members, including his daughter-in-law’s family, were released online by the investigative website Fact Focus. Following this, Finance Minister Dar on Monday ordered an inquiry into the matter. According to Fact Focus, Gen Bajwa’s family members and relatives became billionaires during his six-year tenure, taking his wealth to Rs 12.7 billion.
There has been an increase in the property of wife-daughter-in-law and other relatives
The report, released a few days before Gen Bajwa’s scheduled retirement, claimed that the wealth of Gen Bajwa’s wife Ayesha Amjad went from zero in 2016 to Rs 2.2 billion (declared and known) in six years. It added that the amount does not include residential plots, commercial plots and houses given to her husband by the Army. The report also alleged that the net worth of declared assets of Mahnoor Sabir (Gen Bajwa’s daughter-in-law) increased from nil in the last week of October 2018 to Rs 1,271 million as on November 2, 2018.
